La Matanza Familiar

Desde he estado en Soria, la gente ha estado diciéndome que hay típos diferentes de las matanzas del cerdo. Variable se usa frases como la matanza "familiar", la matanza de "casa", la matanza "comercial" or turistica", o la matanza "autentica". Pero ¿qué significa la matanza familiar? ¿La matanza turistica? ¿La matanza tradicional?

Since I have been in the province of Soria, people have been telling me that there are different types of las matanzas del cerdo. Variable they use phrases like the "family" matanza, la matanza from "home," the "commercial" or "truistic," or the "authentic" matanza.

El sábado se me invitó asistir Las Jornadas de la Matanza en el pueblo de Recuerda, Soria, dónde se ha estado realizando una matanza en su forma actual por unos diez años. Normalmente el pueblo tiene menos de cincuenta personas que vive allí, pero durante Las Jornadas hay mas cercana de 100 personas que lo asisten. Había estado dicho que esta matanza es una matanza "familiar", y estaba curioso para ver exactamente eso significa.

Saturday I was invited to attend Las Jornadas de la Matanza in the town of Recuerda, Soria, where they have been doing a matanza del cerdo en its current form for about ten years. Normally, the town has less than 50 people that live there, but during Las Jornadas there are more like 100 people that attend. I had been told that this matanza is a "family" matanza, and I was curious to see exactly what that meant.

De aquellos que vinieron, la mayoría tiene familia que vivir en el pueblo, pero mucha tiene solos amigos.

Of those that came, the majority have family that live in the town, but many only have friends there.

El sacrificio de la matanza se realiza durante dos días, el sábado y el domingo, pero las fechas no son fijadas. Ocurre en un manera normal: en publico dónde todo puede mirar,

The slaughter (la matanza) is completed during two days, Saturday and Sunday, but the exact dates themselves are not fixed. It occurs in the regular manner: in public where all can watch,

con la musica, la comida y el vino,

with music, food and wine,

 se limpia el cerdo con fuego y agua caliente,

the pig is killed and cleaned with fire and hot water,

y se corta y dejar de secarse de noche. El domingo viene un veterinario para inspeccionar el cerdo por triquinosis, y después se elaborará los products típicos: las morcillas, los chorizos, los jamones, etc.

and it is cut open and left to dry overnight. On Sunday a veterinarian comes to inspect the pig for Trichinosis, and after the inspection they make the typical products: las morcillas, los choizos, los jamones, etc. 

El sábado por la mañana se prepara la carne de un cerdo que había matado el año anterior.

On Saturday morning they prepare the meat from the pig that they had killed the year before.

Después de sacrificar, comimos juntos en un gran sala. Había mucho bueno carne del cerdo y vino y licor se elabora en el pueblo. Después de comer, había la música y bailando.

After the slaughter, we ate together in a big room. There was tons of good meat from the pig and wine and liquor produced locally. After we ate, there was music and dancing.

No puedo decir qué significa la matanza "familiar" exactamente, pero si significa que la familia y buenos amigos vienen juntos para disfrutarse y comer todo el cerdo, entonces quizás Las Jornadas de Recuerda podría ser lo mas "familiar" que un extranjero como yo es probable encontrar.

I cannot say for sure what exactly a "family" matanza means, but if it means that the family and good friends come together to have a good time and to eat all the parts of a pig, then maybe Las Jornadas de Recuerda could be the most "family" like matanza that a foreigner like me is likely to find.
