Two weeks ago we celebrated a fiesta called Jueves Lardero which marks the beginning of Carnival. Originating in the Middle Ages, it was a time for bodily purification, but later was converted into a fiesta to celebrate eating meat before its prohibition during the following forty days. "Lardero" is from the latin "lardus," a reference to the importance of pork during the celebration.
This day is celebrated differently in the various regions of Spain, but here in Soria it is a fiesta with friends and family to eat a dinner of chorizo (a type of pork sausage) and wine. While the youth use this day to party, I was invited to a friend's bodega for the celebration.
